While my girlfriends are diligently learning in school, I’m eye to eye with an open cremation in the holy city of Varanasi. A burning human, only covered with some waferthin colorful cloths, does something to your mood. A ferocious confrontation with the finitude of human existence. I’m barely seven years old.

Is dood het einde?
Terwijl mijn vriendinnetjes op school ijverig aan het leren zijn, sta ik oog in oog met een open crematie in de heilige stad Varanasi. Een brandend mens, enkel bedekt met wat flinterdunne kleurrijke doeken, doet iets met je gemoedstoestand. Een snoeiharde confrontatie met de eindigheid van het menselijk bestaan. Ik ben amper zeven jaar.
